چکیده

Emerging research has suggested that digital games can generate entertainment experiences beyond hedonic enjoyment towards eudaimonic experiences: Being emotionally moved, stimulated to reflect on one’s self or a sense of elevation. Studies in this area have mainly focused individual game characteristics elicit singular and static moments. However, such focus neglects the interplay multiple aspects as well dynamic nature experiences. The current study takes novel approach by conducting qualitative analysis three (Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Detroit: Become Human, God War) taking systematic notes shortly after playing. Results reveal moving, reflective, elevating were elicited when gameplay strong involvement with game’s narrative characters (i.e., engagement) and, some cases, narrative-impacting choices. These key aspects, turn, are enhanced clean player interfaces, graphically realistic characters, close camera perspectives, tone-appropriate soundtrack scores, both narrative-enhancing (e.g., War’s health mechanic) choice-enhancing mechanics Human’s flowchart). Eudaimonic also found evolve throughout game, more powerful occurring near end themes fueling flow overall narrative. This adds academic studying suggesting an innovative methodological provides detailed, integrative, perspective

Analyzing Computer Game Narratives

In many computer games narrative is a core component with the game centering on an unfolding, interactive storyline which both motivates and is driven by the game-play. Analyzing narratives to ensure good properties is thus important, but scalability remains a barrier to practical use. Here we develop a formal analysis system for interactive fiction narratives. Our approach is based on a relati...

Generating Game Narratives with Focalization and Flashbacks

In this paper we describe a system for generating textual narrations of what happened in a simulation-based serious game, focusing on the use of focalization (telling the story from the perspective of one of the characters) and flashbacks to give the player insights into the internal state of non-player characters.

Generating and Adapting Game Mechanics

Game designs often center on the game mechanics—rules governing the logical evolution of the game. We seek to develop an intelligent system that generates computer games and assists humans in designing games. As first steps towards this goal we present a composable and cross-domain representation for game mechanics that draws from AI planning action representations. We use a constraint solver t...

Analyzing Modern Computer Game Narratives

In many computer games, narrative is a core component, with the game centering on an unfolding, interactive storyline which both motivates and is driven by the game-play. For larger games, however, narrative size and complexity makes analysis difficult, and while formal approaches to assessing game narratives and identifying flaws have been proposed, scalability remains a barrier to practical u...

Cultural Narratives in Game Design

Game studies scholars have focused on many aspects of culture in digital games [16] [20] [26] and related areas in game production [4] [23]. This study, however, focuses on culture from a game designer’s perspective and on the cultural narrative game designers communicate through their designs. This study will examine 1) The ways in which game designers reflect on the concept of culture 2) The ...
